Phenotype switch in patient with MLL rearrangement: a case presentation

Authors: Bertuzzi A, Barrera J, Kolarovic MB, Villaverde N

Abstract: Phenotype switch while treating acute leukemia is an uncommon event which has been described on pediatric patients and it is related to poor prognosis. Most reports have been acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) to acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) conversion, which are associated with the rearrangement on chromosome 11, involving the MLL gene. A clinical case of a 32-year-old man with diagnosis of pro B ALL is presented. A phenotype switch to AML was evidenced during treatment. The presence of the MLL gene rearrangement was shown on both blast populations, in spite of their different immunophenotype, confirming the population shift.

Key words: acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia, phenotype switch, lineage change, MLL.
