Acute lymphoblastic leukemia: rare presentation with multiple osteolytic lesions

Authors: González S, Beccacece M, Sardu L, Avila L

Abstract: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with bone disease and multiple osteolytic lesions has not been frequently described in children, and is an extremely rare presentation in adults. Although the disease begins in the bone marrow, any other organ can be infiltrated by leukemic cells. Skeletal abnormalities described in association with ALL include: osteoporosis, periosteal reaction, reactive sclerosis, lytic defects and vertebral compression fractures. We present an 18 years old a female patient whose first disease manifestation was multiple osteolytic lesions. The laboratory shows severe anemia, hypercalcemia, acute renal failure and absence of blasts in peripheral blood.

Key words: lytic bone lesions, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, hypercalcemia.
